    Emotions organize cognitive processes and action tendencies, thereby shap-ing social interactions in systematic ways

    To test hypotheses about positive emotion, the authors examined the relationship of positive emotional expression in women's college pictures to personality, observer ratings, and life outcomes. Consistent with the notion that positive emotions help build personal resources, positive emotional expression correlated with the self-reported personality traits of affiliation, competence, and low negative emotionality across adulthood and predicted changes in competence and negative emotionality. Observers rated women displaying more positive emotion more favorably on several personality dimensions and expected interactions with them to be more rewarding; thus, demonstrating the beneficial social consequences of positive emotions. Finally, positive emotional expression predicted favorable outcomes in marriage and personal well-being up to 30 years later. Controlling for physical attractiveness and social desirability had little impact on these findings. Individual differences in emotion are thought to shape personality and life outcomes across the life course. In this article, we examine whether positive emotionality measured from college yearbook photos at age 21 relates to personality traits, observer responses, marital outcomes, and personal well-being. Our hypotheses were derived from recent theorizing about personalityemotion relations and positive emotion. After reviewing the main assumptions and the 5 main principles of the framework, 2 streams of research are presented. One stream addresses emotional carryover effects on the assessment of risk; the other addresses carryover effects on the assessment of monetary value. Because risk assessment and value assessment are fundamental psychological processes, understanding them has the potential to yield manifold implications for consumer judgment and decision making.     Emotion and Prejudice: Specific Emotions Toward Outgroups

    This research draws on ideas about emotion-related appraisal tendencies to generate and test novel propositions about intergroup emotions. First, emotion elicited by outgroup category activation can be transferred to an unrelated stimulus (incidental emotion effects). Second, people predisposed toward an emotion are more prejudiced toward groups that are likely to be associated with that emotion. Discussion focuses on the implications of the studies for a more complete understanding of the nature of prejudice, and specifically, the different qualities of prejudice for different target groups

    The relationship of socioeconomic status in childhood and adulthood with compassion : A study with a prospective 32-year follow-up

    The objective of this study was to investigate (i) whether childhood family SES predicts offspring's compassion between ages 20-50 years and (ii) whether adulthood SES predicts compassion or vice versa. We used the prospective population-based Young Finns data (N = 637-2300). Childhood family SES was evaluated in 1980; participants' adulthood SES in 2001 and 2011; and compassion for others in 1997, 2001, and 2012. Compassion for others was evaluated with the Compassion scale of the Temperament and Character Inventory. The results showed that high childhood family SES (a composite score of educational level, occupational status, unemployment status, and level of income) predicted offspring's higher compassion between ages 30-40 years but not in early adulthood or middle age. These results were obtained independently of a variety of potential confounders (disruptive behavior in childhood; parental mental disorder; frequency of parental alcohol use and alcohol intoxication). Moreover, high compassion for others in adulthood (a composite score of educational level, occupational status, and unemployment status) predicted higher adulthood SES later in their life (after a 10-year follow-up), but not vice versa. In conclusion, favorable socioeconomic environment in childhood appears to have a positive effect on offspring's compassion in their middle adulthood. This effect may attenuate by middle age. High compassion for others seems to promote the achievement of higher SES in adulthood.Peer reviewe

    The ACII 2022 Affective Vocal Bursts Workshop & Competition: understanding a critically understudied modality of emotional expression

    The ACII Affective Vocal Bursts Workshop & Competition is focused on understanding multiple affective dimensions of vocal bursts: laughs, gasps, cries, screams, and many other non-linguistic vocalizations central to the expression of emotion and to human communication more generally. This year's competition comprises four tracks using a large-scale and in-the-wild dataset of 59,299 vocalizations from 1,702 speakers. The first, the A-VB-High task, requires competition participants to perform a multi-label regression on a novel model for emotion, utilizing ten classes of richly annotated emotional expression intensities, including; Awe, Fear, and Surprise. The second, the A-VB-Two task, utilizes the more conventional 2-dimensional model for emotion, arousal, and valence. The third, the A-VB-Culture task, requires participants to explore the cultural aspects of the dataset, training native-country dependent models. Finally, for the fourth task, A-VB-Type, participants should recognize the type of vocal burst (e.g., laughter, cry, grunt) as an 8-class classification. This paper describes the four tracks and baseline systems, which use state-of-the-art machine learning methods. The baseline performance for each track is obtained by utilizing an end-to-end deep learning model and is as follows: for A-VB-High, a mean (over the 10-dimensions) Concordance Correlation Coefficient (CCC) of 0.5687 CCC is obtained; for A-VB-Two, a mean (over the 2-dimensions) CCC of 0.5084 is obtained; for A-VB-Culture, a mean CCC from the four cultures of 0.4401 is obtained; and for A-VB-Type, the baseline Unweighted Average Recall (UAR) from the 8-classes is 0.4172 UAR

    On wealth and the diversity of friendships: High social class people around the world have fewer international friends

Yet little is known about who forms more international friendships. Here, we propose social class plays a key role in determining people’s internationalism. We conducted two studies to test whether social class is related positively to internationalism (the building social class hypothesis) or negatively to internationalism (the restricting social class hypothesis). In Study 1, we found that among individuals in the United States, social class was negatively related to percentage of friends on Facebook that are outside the United States. In Study 2, we extended these findings to the global level by analyzing country-level data on Facebook friends formed in 2011 (nearly 50 billion friendships) across 187 countries. We found that people from higher social class countries (as indexed by GDP per capita) had lower levels of internationalism—that is, they made more friendships domestically than abroad
